Basel enjoyed another UEFA Champions League win over English opposition after defeating Liverpool 1-0 at St Jakob Park on Wednesday.
The Swiss side beat Chelsea at home and away at this stage last season and sent Manchester United crashing out of the competition following a 2-1 win in December 2011.
This time around Basel had 33-year-old forward Marco Streller to thank for another famous triumph as he bagged a poacher s goal early on in the second half.
Having taken a 5-1 hammering at Real Madrid in their opening fixture, victory puts Basel back on track ahead of two games with Ludogorets.
Liverpool began the Group B campaign by only just beating Ludogorets 2-1 with a Steven Gerrard penalty deep into stoppage time.
And this was another nervous di…
Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda said his team will be out to dictate possession against Group E rivals Switzerland on Sunday.
Rueda s men kick-off their FIFA World Cup campaign against Switzerland in Brasilia, with the Swiss overwhelming favourites to win and also progress from the group.
Switzerland have only lost one of their past 18 international fixtures a 2-1 defeat to South Korea in October.
But Rueda insists Ecuador will take the game to a Switzerland team boasting the likes of Gokhan Inler, Valentin Stocker, Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri and Josip Drmic.
We are conscious of our potential as well as the differences we have within our group rivals, Rueda said of Group E, which also consists of France and Honduras.
But I trust Ecuador has a very good grou…
Romelu Lukaku s blockbusting move to Manchester United represents a key pillar of Jose Mourinho s plans to launch a Premier League title challenge at the second attempt at Old Trafford.
But a Belgium international pursuing the top prize in English football is certainly nothing new, with an exceptional generation of Red Devils talent represented across those sides chasing glory.
Can Lukaku unseat Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard this time around, or will Manchester City s Kevin De Bryune, Tottenham s Mousa Dembele or Liverpool s Divock Origi muscle in on the title picture. Alternatively, Arsenal could upset fans of Belgium players everywhere

Leicester City have completed the signing of attacker Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow on a four-year contract.
Claudio Ranieri s side confirmed on Friday that they have finalised their move for the Nigeria international, pending FA and Premier League approval.
Musa, 23, has reportedly cost Leicester a club-record fee of around £16million.
I feel very happy joining Leicester City, for me it is one of the best clubs and I feel very happy, Musa told the club s official website.
I joined because it is one of the best clubs in the Premier League and they are like a family. That is why I joined Leicester City and I am very excited.
I look forward to seeing the fans in the new season and I will do my best to make them happy.

Market: Bayern Munich win to nil
Odds:
Handed a real chance to make a statement in midweek and book their spot in the semi-finals of this year s DFP Pokal, Bayern Munich will travel to the VELTINS-Arena on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, putting in what was another woeful display and hit with a 3-0 hammering away at Koln over the weekend, Schalke have begun to show some real cause for concern. Falling out of the top-four and also still reeling from their 5-0 defeat against RB Leipzig last month, former Huddersfield boss David Wagner has seen his side fail to win any of their last seven matches within 90 minutes. Even more worrying for fans around the VELTINS-Arena, the Royal Blues have now failed to find the net in their last three appearances on the sp…
Newcastle United has completed a club-record deadline-day move for midfielder Miguel Almiron from MLS side Atlanta United.
The on-off move had been on hold since December, when Almiron led Atlanta to the MLS Cup, and was finalized Thursday as Newcastle splashed out a reported £20.5million (approx. $26.9 million) on the Paraguay international.
The deal sees the Premier League s longest standing club-record broken, with the Magpies belatedly agreeing a deal to surpass their £16.5m (approx. $21.6 million) signing of Michael Owen in 2005.
Almiron was nominated for the MVP award in MLS in 2018, having quickly established himself as one of the league s standout stars after arriving at the expansion side the previous season.

Mauricio Pochettino admitted his Chelsea players are relying on Cole Palmer to get them out of trouble during games this season.
The summer signing from Manchester City is top scorer at Stamford Bridge after his two goals against Burnley on Saturday took him to 16 for the campaign.
His impact has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise tumultuous season for Pochettino and his team, who languish in the bottom half of the Premier League table after failing to overcome the league’s second-bottom side at home despite playing against 10 men for the entirety of the second half.
Palmer scored a first-half penalty to break the deadlock then, after Burnley had levelled via Josh Cullen’s volley, looked to have won it with a finely taken finish into the corner …
Kylian Mbappe suffered from muscle fatigue in Paris Saint-Germain s win at Lorient, says Christophe Galtier, who has eased fears over the attacker s fitness ahead of the World Cup.
Danilo Pereira s late header sent PSG five points clear at the top of Ligue 1 on Sunday, after in-form Terem Moffi had cancelled out Neymar s opener at the Stade du Moustoir.
However, Mbappe attracted attention by heading straight down the tunnel following his 85th-minute withdrawal.
France will already be without Paul Pogba and N Golo Kante for their World Cup defence, while Karim Benzema has missed several of Real Madrid s fixtures during an injury-hit season, including the upcoming meeting with Rayo Vallecano.
Galtier, however, quashed concerns over Mbappe s condition after …
Former North Queensland striker Chris Payne has left Newcastle after managing just one match since joining the Jets at the start of the season.
The 21-year-old spent just nine minutes on the pitch in his only 2011/12 appearance for Newcastle, after being brought on as a substitute against Sydney FC on December 17.
Payne was recruited by Newcastle after playing 21 games and scoring four goals for the now-defunct Fury last season.
I am disappointed that due to a change in circumstances at Newcastle that my time at the club has been cut short and has not worked out the way that I planned, Payne said.
I want to wish the rest of the boys in the squad all the best, and I will now look to further my career at a new club and achieve my goals as I have a lot of…
Manager Rob Edwards admitted to feeling “drained” after Luton scored a 90th-minute winner to come from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 at Kenilworth Road and take a huge step in the direction of Premier League survival.
Carlton Morris’s goal at the death – which was knocked in at the far post from substitute Cauley Woodrow’s cross – capped a strong second-half display from the home side and moved them level on points with 17th-place Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.
That footnote felt insignificant at the end as the stadium rocked with the euphoria of a first league win since Brighton were beaten here late in January.
