West Brom confirm Popov loan return

West Brom have confirmed the return of Macedonian defender Goran Popov on a season-long loan.

The Dynamo Kiev player spent last season on loan at The Hawthorns, making 13 appearances in total as Steve Clarke s side finished eighth in the Premier League.

Popov joins Nicolas Anelka in arriving at the club this close-season and Clarke said he had always been interested in re-signing the 28-year-old.

It was always our intention to get Goran back over the summer, Clarke told the club s official website.

He knows what the club’s about and we know what he’s about. He s a good player and it makes sense to bring him back.

He understands the Premier League better now as well and we will look for even more from him next season.

The club s sporting and technical director (designate), Richard Garlick, said Popov would act as competition for Liam Ridgewell.

He said: “Everybody at the club is delighted Goran will be with us again this season.

Having spent last season at the club on loan, we know exactly what we are getting from him.

He offers us something slightly different to Liam in that position and they will again battle it out for a starting place.

Popov won two league runners-up medals while at Dynamo and was also the winner of the KNVB Cup at Heerenveen in 2009.
